Legislative and Agency Efforts
BSUBA is Montana's only organization that advocates for:
- all upland bird species,
- investments improving habitats,
- better access to public and private lands, and,
- effective collaborations between hunters, landowners, biologists, and agencies."
To these ends, BSUBA tracks and comments on relevant legislation during Montana's biennial law-making sessions. In the 2023 session we are tracking bills to:
- shift public funds from releasing pen-raised pheasants to instead improving habitat and public access for more durable upland hunting enhancement;
- limit and monitor the impacts of intensive commercial dogs training on public hunting lands;
- make Montana's upland bird hunting limits more consistent with neighboring states to accommodate comparable access opportunities.
BSUBA has also been involved for years with Montana's Citizen Advisory Council on upland birds, supported expansion of Block Management acreage, worked to reopen illegally closed roads accessing federal lands, and has helped advance with agencies and landowners an intensive project to restore sharp-tailed grouse to western Montana.
